The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has implemented a substantial increase in cargo handling fees at airports across the country—marking the first major revision in over five years. In some cases, charges have soared by as much as 100 times, as the authority moves to bring rates in line with the current costs of operating airport services.

According to an official notice issued on Wednesday, the new fee structure took effect on July 1 and was approved by PAA’s executive committee. Officials said the changes were necessary due to mounting operational expenses that have remained unaccounted for under the previous rates.

Among the adjustments:

  • Transport fees for pet birds have risen by 50%, going from Rs200 to Rs300 per kilogram.
  • Betel leaf shipping charges have doubled, now costing Rs70 per kilogram.
  • General cargo rates have increased by 25%, moving from Rs100 to Rs125 per kilogram.

The updated structure also revises fees for other live animals, such as cats and dogs, along with various goods listed under general cargo.

Officials from the PAA have justified the increase, highlighting that tariff rates had been frozen for years while airport operating costs steadily climbed, making the update necessary to sustain service quality.

Formed as an autonomous body in August 2024 under the Pakistan Airports Authority Act, the PAA is tasked with the management, development, and efficient operation of airport and air transport services across Pakistan.
